Successful Human Resources Management for Successful Businesses
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Effective human resources management transcends more than the HR employee and the manager. Successful human resources management can have a positive effect on an entire organization. Good leadership and motivational skills can help increase productivity and boost morale among team members, which can resonate throughout the company.

Human resources management begins with respect for the employee. When employees feel that they are treated with respect, they will respond in kind. Respecting employees means treating them politely, kindly, and showing them courtesy. Nothing ruins a sense of teamwork and belonging quicker than being impolite. Respect means encouraging employees to voice ideas and opinions. Usually, the most qualified people to speak to problems in the work environment are those who are actually in the trenches. Their ideas can help improve productivity and even impact the bottom line. Human resources management should also let the employee know that the idea is being implemented, or even encourage that employee to implement the idea themselves.

Respect means listening to the employee and others and assimilating the information before expressing the human resources management viewpoint. Listen fully without interruption. Do not insult employees, call them names, belittle them, or be condescending towards them or their ideas. This sort of activity, over time, can add up and be akin to bullying.

Respect means keeping employees informed of all the goings-on within the team. That constitutes inclusion in brainstorms, meetings, and discussions, as well as providing for their training. Although not every person will be able to involve themselves in every facet of the team, deliberate exclusion can be disrespectful.

In addition to respect, effective human resources management goes hand-in-hand with effective communication. Good communication involves more than just talking. It is a two-way exchange of ideas, with listening being more important than talking. When the communication process breaks down, unfortunate events can occur. For example, a critical task might go unaccomplished because one employee thought the other was supposed to handle the task. Clear and proper communication prevents these situations and strengthens the team.

Human resources management carries a tremendous responsibility. Human resources is a very important department within a company. They make sure that the company is compliant with numerous laws. They are also tasked with the responsibility of keeping a company’s most prized assets – its people – working together harmoniously. Management must lead the teams that keep the organization and its people running. Using respect and communication as a foundation for leadership, successful teams result in successful companies.
